Mammoth 22 track album recorded on Saturdays January-July 1993 and released on Ruth Miller's tiny independent label Rutland Records. Although the songs have a happy jangly feel to them, the lyrics reflect ordinary female experience that includes unfulfillment, loss, bullying, questioning and the class struggle. John Peel played tracks on his show and invited Po! do do a session for his BBC Radio 1 show.

lyrics

Summertime; there’s only you and me around
Let’s go down to the ice-cream parlour
You and me were meant to be
The teenage queens of the seven seas
But dreams of ice-cream will always hold you down.

Money talks; it whispers secrets in your ear
And you can hear the rippling of his wallet
Tina don’t be foolish
He’s just lying through his golden grin
To him you’re just another ice-cream girl.

When you smile, you force your muscles to unlock
And when you knock, the door will always open
Johnny leaves and Steve drops by
A steady flow of flashy guys
The dream has melted so what are you gonna do now?

Themes are often dark yet the tunes are singable, jangly and very English-sounding.First formed in 1987 with punk roots and an indie-pop style, PO! is not a typical band. After a Peel session and an NME single of the week, Ruth gave it all up 1999-2016 but the band are back with new songs! ... more
