Tina 02:19
Summertime; there’s only you and me around Let’s go down to the ice-cream parlour You and me were meant to be The teenage queens of the seven seas But dreams of ice-cream will always hold you down. Money talks; it whispers secrets in your ear And you can hear the rippling of his wallet Tina don’t be foolish He’s just lying through his golden grin To him you’re just another ice-cream girl. When you smile, you force your muscles to unlock And when you knock, the door will always open Johnny leaves and Steve drops by A steady flow of flashy guys The dream has melted so what are you gonna do now?

Treasure 02:09
A bloke lived on his own in a run-down part of town He owned no furniture, no books, no dressing-gown No-one was his friend No-one came to stay Look away Don’t look away So many things you search for are hidden inside You know the face Is not the place If you want treasure just dig and you’ll find I used to sit entranced by stories of romance The beast turned handsome and the frog became a prince Close your eyes and see Dreams come true today Look away Don’t look away So many things you search for are hidden inside You know the face Is not the place If you want treasure just dig and you’ll find Nothing will change overnight Nothing will change overnight Look away Don’t look away So many things you search for are hidden inside You know the face Is not the place If you want treasure just dig and you’ll find

I’ve been waiting here since Monday Sunday never comes around. Sunday, we’ll go running to the secret lake Where the water tasted so sweet You know that I could drink it all day And still be steady on my feet It’s the kind of place most people haven’t found It’s the kind of feeling where nothing’s on the ground I’ve been waiting here since Monday Sunday never comes around. Monday, I’ll be staring out my window Bringing mountains down to me And I’ve forgotten what you look like Though I try so desperately The days pass so slowly but the weeks go flying by You’re always in my dreams but never by my side. I’ve been waiting here since Monday Sunday never comes around.

Engineering 03:34
Leave me now; I’ve got to go and think it over Slugs and snails, they always get around me somehow The pipes that run into the sea Carry all the words you said to me I’ll always pass you by and look you in the eye But there’s one thing I won’t do – I won’t cry Clever men, they engineer communications Bridges break; they rub their hands and build another The pipes that run into the sea Carry all the words you said to me I’ll always pass you by and look you in the eye But there’s one thing I won’t do – I won’t cry Summer’s gone; I keep my feelings under glass now People know; they keep their distance and don’t touch me The pipes that run into the sea Carry all the words you said to me I’ll always pass you by and look you in the eye But there’s one thing I won’t do – I won’t cry

Danny's Girl 03:44
Danny’s girl licks a chocolate ice-cream Danny’s girl stares at love upon the screen She wears a yellow dress Bloody varnish on her tiny nails And though her neck’s a mess She smiles the smile that never fails “I don’t want you to catch my eye tonight” “I don’t want you to catch my eye tonight” In the Spring, we’ll be happy and free In the Spring, we’ll have honey for tea. Danny’s girl looking out the window Danny’s girl watching all the stars go She wears a yellow bruise Lying by the purple wall And when she goes to sleep She doesn’t dream at all. “I don’t want you to catch my eye tonight” “I don’t want you to catch my eye tonight” In the Spring, we’ll be happy and free In the Spring, we’ll have honey for tea. Danny says he doesn’t want his baby Danny says that he would leave her maybe She throws a yellow plate Smashed against the purple wall She recognises fate Every time he comes to call. “I don’t want you to catch my eye tonight” “I don’t want you to catch my eye tonight” In the Spring, we’ll be happy and free In the Spring, we’ll have honey for tea.

Trains Go By 03:04
When the sky is just the colour that it always is My room feels just small enough for what I need I need a little time just on my own The trains go They rattle through my very soul I won’t be standing there long I’ll still be singing this song I won’t be sitting alone Trains still come and they still go. I can’t go North I can’t go South I can’t go East I can’t go back I can’t go out I can’t go round I can’t go far I can’t go down.

Look for the holes in your life Where the fishermen are sitting knotting I’ve grown; oh how I’ve grown So goodbye. I’m not the nurse that you crave With a pocket full of soothing potions. I’m brave; I’m not your slave, So goodbye. Some people cling to the past Like a very hungry little puppy. I know I won’t be the last So goodbye. Think of the good times we had And you’ll never ever ever hate me. Be sad; please don’t get mad It’s good bye.

Bigger Wall 03:33
The wall that stands beside your tulip tree Is cold and threatening to me I’ve seen you daring me to sit on it So you can come and shout at me. You need a bigger wall You need a bigger wall You need a bigger wall to keep the neighbour’s kids out. The wall that crumbled into history Is there for everyone to see But soldiers crouching in a foreign land Will never ever quite believe. You need a bigger wall You need a bigger wall You need a bigger wall so that the world keeps turning. Higher than the mountains Higher than the eagle Higher than the eye can see I walk along the wall with heavy feet And see the strangers on both sides I shiver in the mist of ignorance And weep at civilising lies You need a bigger wall You need a bigger wall You need a bigger wall to keep the whole world out.

In My Dream 03:28
All the things you said to me You told me lies I won’t stay, I won’t stay. Places that you said they were They don’t exist I won’t stay, I won’t stay. You don’t get a second chance I’m worth much more than that You don’t get a second look You’re just a number in my book. Little things you bought for me Just out of guilt I won’t stay, I won’t stay. Love means fun and games for you This time you lose I won’t stay, I won’t stay. You don’t get a second chance I’m worth much more than that You don’t get a second look You’re just a number in my book.

I Won't Stay 04:32
All the things you said to me You told me lies I won’t stay, I won’t stay. Places that you said they were They don’t exist I won’t stay, I won’t stay. You don’t get a second chance I’m worth much more than that You don’t get a second look You’re just a number in my book. Little things you bought for me Just out of guilt I won’t stay, I won’t stay. Love means fun and games for you This time you lose I won’t stay, I won’t stay. You don’t get a second chance I’m worth much more than that You don’t get a second look You’re just a number in my book.

She’s the genie with no lamp She’s frightened in the dark No-one knows about her and they never let her out And in the street, the girls play kiss and run In their bare feet, squinting at the sun. Genie’s locked into a world No love, no light, no sound The spell is spun, the damage done It’s too late when she’s found. And in the street, the girls play kiss and run In their bare feet, squinting at the sun. I hear her whimpering I hear her whimpering I hear her whimpering She’s been there for thirteen years It’s hard to understand Someone’s guilty secret Has been getting out of hand.

Friday night, skies are pink Village lies half asleep Tulips bloom, cars go by What a gorgeous place to dies But we’re young; life is for us So we smoke In the bus shelter that’s a nightclub to us. Motorbikes, cans of beer Dirty jokes our culture here Who said what, who’s a slag Who got caught with Kieran’s dad Oh we’re young; life is for us So we smoke In the bus shelter that’s a nightclub to us.

Time is on your side …. In the rain, in the rain Time is on your side …. In the rain, in the rain Time is on your side …. In the rain, in the rain Time is on your side …. In the rain, in the rain In the rain

The artist and the model stroll hand in hand Drawing my attention Changing my perspective A long time ago you used my name And the money’s rolling in. I sat around for hours in your studio Drinking in the sunlight Smoothing out your madness I was young and I didn’t know What the future held. I would give anything you like to live Anywhere but on your wall In a frame of gilt. And if I worked all year at the hospital Someone would outbid me For a picture of me I don’t own the flesh on my bones Or a picture of you. I would try anything but I can’t buy Images of you or I In a frame of gilt.

Two Friends 04:40
I’ve got two friends Jenny is a nurse And Susan is an exotic dancer Jenny goes out once a month And Susan’s never in Jenny lives on Nescafe And Susan lives on gin. Two friends are better than one And one friend is better than none. I’ve got two friends Johnny’s into junk And Simon is insurance crazy Simon’s saving for the bad times While Johnny just takes what he needs Simon lives in N15 And John in LE3. There are so many people in my head I don’t know which is me; Two friends are better than one And one friend is better than none.
16.
In the hilltops and the corner shops She stole your heart and ran All the boys tell you to stop But she’s your kind of man The smile that disarms is a countess of charms Tear yourself away And don’t be alarmed when you falls through her arms You’ll live to love another day From Solihull to the Isle of Mull She’ll find you and your fear She’ll promise you a lifetime But will always disappear The smile that disarms is a countess of charms Tear yourself away And don’t be alarmed when you fall through her arms You’ll live to love another day There’s fatalists and there’s nihilists And martyrs who have seen her Dying for a country Where the grass is always greener The smile that disarms is a countess of charms Tear yourself away And don’t be alarmed when you fall through her arms You’ll live to love another day
17.
Put your swollen head on my lap And I’ll scare off the bad dreams The devil tries to enter at night In disguise and the girl screams He tries to touch you But the vision is gone Now everybody wonders what’s wrong. There’s something in the back of her mind Makes her scared of the big book The monster hands are holding it now At the place where she mustn’t look There’s nothing sacred Flesh is ever so weak Now they’re trying to make that little girl speak. There’s a smell of evil in Jacqueline’s house China on the table and bibles all around Everybody sits up straight when Father is about Everybody shuts their mouth in case the Truth comes out.
18.
There’s always someone that knows better than me Someone who can prove it Someone always takes the pen from my hand Forces my words to fit I could be her She could be me Nobody would know I could be her She could be me Nobody would know And now I feel so much at ease with the world Nothing really left to say I hope tomorrow will be just like the day Little sister went away I could be her She could be me Nobody would know I could be her She could be me Nobody would know I sit and watch the girl who used to be me Speaking shallow promises She sends the poison and the fireworks to me In a lovely letter I could be her She could be me Nobody would know I could be her She could be me Nobody would know

Ruby Dream 03:18
Dream Ruby Dream Under the melon tree Mummy’s pinning all her hopes on you Anyone can see You’re a prodigy Peace and comfort smiling down on you The thing she always wanted vanished with her luck She’s got an occupation Mummy now and Granny when you Dream Ruby Dream Under the wishing tree Take a look at Ruby history Babies come for free A teenage shopping spree Patterns keep repeating can’t you see The thing she always wanted vanished with her luck She’s got an occupation Mummy now and Granny when you The thing she always wanted vanished with her luck She’s got an occupation Mummy now and Dream Ruby Dream Under the weeping tree You can cry for anything you need Underneath the frills The pastel pink and glee Your blood is full of nicotine and speed Dream Ruby Dream Dream Ruby Dream Dream Ruby Dream Dream Ruby Dream

Mother I want to leave this body far behind Go for a walk in someone else’s shoes Going out and kissing the world With lips that are not mine. Mother I tried to be what you want of me Hustle to get me to the church on time Stepping out in peaches and pearls And lips that are not mine. Tickle the tongues that wag. Mother I want to see the other side to life Facing the earth not staring at the sky Going out and kissing the world With lips that are not mine.

Fay 03:19
Fay I heard your name today People laughing still at the things you used to say Fay you never go away Always lacking style There was mischief in your smile I saw your mother looking so sad She never thought that things would turn out this bad Fay you always had your way Hit the boys and run Spit on graves for fun Fay but then one day you changed You became afraid Laughter turned to rage I saw your mother looking so sad She never thought that things would turn out this bad Fay then one day you changed You became afraid Laughter turned to rage Fay there’s nothing I can say I’d take up arms and kill The men that made you ill I saw your mother looking so sad She never thought that things would turn out this bad Fay

about

Ruth took out a loan with Marks and Spencers to pay for this album when Barclays Bank turned her record company Rutland Records down. In 1993, before the Internet, publicity came via fanzines, radio play and sending out newsletters worldwide. Somehow, Po! gained hundreds of fans in Spain, the USA and Japan although they rarely played live. These songs chronicle real female experience in small-town England and are a product of amateur musicians fired-up on the DIY ethos.

about

PO! Leicester, UK

Ruth Po! set up her own record company and writes incisive songs from an ordinary female perspective. Themes are often dark yet the tunes are singable, jangly and very English-sounding.First formed in 1987 with punk roots and an indie-pop style, PO! is not a typical band. After a Peel session and an NME single of the week, Ruth gave it all up 1999-2016 but the band are back with new songs! ... more
